I purchased this steam engine and a Stover hit and miss at a local online auction, bought them sight unseen. I didn't know what to expect when I went to pick them up so I prepared myself for the worst possible condition, siezed, cracked, beyond repair, parts missing, you just never know. I'm familiar with the Stover so I was pleased to see it was intact except for the magneto and I knew that was missing from the auctioneers pictures. Its siezed but I'm not too concerned with that. The Payne steam engine was my real treasure. I started pulling things apart to take inventory and I was surprised to see the engine was intact, some minor parts missing and a broken timing cam follower were the main concerns. The engine was not siezed and was in otherwise good shape. I suppose it was pulled from a pump or sawmill and stored in a barn for the last 50 years. I started with a progression of pictures first dismantleing then re assembling. My intent is not to refurbish the engine but to clean it, tichen it up and maybe get it to work under compressed air.
